South Africans took to Twitter to express their frustration and dismay at the cellular network as thousands of consumers saw their data vanish.

This incident adds fuel to an already raging debate where clients regularly accuse mobile networks of stealing their data.

A recent investigation proved that airtime was indeed going missing from MTN – even without usage.

While South African Twitter had all the jokes, Vodacom had to clean up the mess. They promised to reimburse all clients who lost their data – but that’s going to be one hell of a job.

In an interview with 702, Vodacom spokesperson Byron Kennedy said out-of-bundle charges will also be refunded and depleted data bundles will be reinstated.

He said the problem was caused by a configuration change on their billing system.

South Africa has some of the highest data charges in the world and calls have repeatedly been made for prices to be cut.
